News, ISLAMABAD – Pakistan demands continued international assistance as floods ravage the country, forcing its citizens in search of higher and drier places to flee.

“The death toll from the monsoon rains has reached 1,033 and 119 dead in the last 24 hours,” the Pakistan National Disaster Management Agency said.

USA, UK, UAE and other countries contributed to this disaster relief call, but Pakistan needs more funding.

On Monday (29/8/2022), the BBC website quoted Assistant Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif as saying that the country is in dire need of international support.

“Pakistan has been grappling with economic problems, but now that we have dealt with it, the monsoon disaster has struck. Funding has also been diverted from many development projects to those affected,” Sofi said.

Prime Minister Sharif announced a 10-billion rupee ($45 million) grant for those living in the hardest-hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa state.

“Each family affected by the floods will get 25,000 rupees, or 112 US dollars, which will be disbursed within a week,” Sharif said.

In the northwest of the country, thousands of people fled their homes after rivers overflowed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, causing devastating floods.

“The house we built with years of hard work started sinking before our eyes. We sat on the side of the road and watched our dream house sink,” Junaid Khan said.

In addition, the province of Sindh in the southeastern region of the country has been hit hard, with thousands of people displaced from their homes.
