Indonesia suffers from a crisis of young breeders. This is something we all need to pay attention to. About 56% of Indonesian breeders are over 50 years old, PPSKI President Nanang Purus Subendo said Thursday (25/8/2022).
His party has opened several support programs for the younger generation interested in entering the livestock field so that innovation can occur, such as experience-sharing sessions with potential breeders, providing training, and opening an internship at a livestock company.

“This effort never stops, even though we are in the midst of Covid-19 or during an outbreak of PMK (oral and nail disease), we continue to run the program,” Nanang said.

Nanang said that with the renewal of breeders, the number of breeders will increase. It is hoped that this will be able to meet the demand for fresh produce and local processed livestock products, which is destined to increase.
“When the demand for meat continues to increase but there is no breeder who replaces the profession of their parents, who will be the breeder, who will become the meat supplier for the national needs. Will we continue to rely on imports, it is impossible,” Nanang said.
On the other hand, Indonesia is believed to have huge potential in the field of livestock trade in the future. “So what I did was invite and even provoke young people into wanting to become farmers. We make sure we can live decently. We can live in prosperity with our profession as breeders,” Nanang said.
It is known that the government through the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kamnan) prepares cattle seeds for distribution to young independent breeders in the hope that they will be able to reproduce. The goal is to increase the number of livestock in Indonesia, as one of the livestock assistance programs.
“We are very Aware with independent farmers. The government also provides a lot of aid to farmers in the form of seeds that are distributed to independent farmers, in the hope that they will be able to increase the number of livestock,” said the Director of Animal Health, General Directorate of Livestock and Animal Health in the Arab Republic of Egypt. Ministry of Agriculture Nouriani Zein El Din.
