China, which claims Taiwan as its territory despite strong objections from the democratically elected Taipei government, launched war games near the island after the arrival of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in early August.
A week after Pelosi’s visit, five other members of the US House of Representatives did the same. The Chinese military responded again by conducting more combat exercises near Taiwan.

Central News Agency (CNA) He did not mention the names of the US lawmakers who arrived tonight, but only said that they will arrive by US military plane at Songshan Airport in downtown Taipei and will meet with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Friday (26/8/2022).
Taiwan’s foreign ministry and the de facto US embassy in Taipei declined to comment.
Pelosi’s visit infuriated China, which responded by testing a ballistic missile for the first time in Taipei, and by ignoring several lines of dialogue with Washington, including military talks and climate change.
The United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan but is bound by its laws to provide the island with the means to defend itself.
China has never ruled out the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.
The Taiwan government says that the People’s Republic of China has never ruled the island and therefore has no right to claim it. The island’s government insists that only its 23 million people can decide their future.
